Today is Giving Tuesday.
You’ve heard of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. But Giving Tuesday is a break in the consumerist holidays. It focuses on giving. Not giving gifts to your friends and family, but giving to those who need it most.
Last year, 700,000 people in 70 countries raised $116 million. That’s amazing!
Whether you can give $5 or $50, find an organization you love and donate.
But Giving Tuesday is also about giving of your time. This year, the campaign is focusing on Giving Hours. Where do you donate your time and talents? Get invested in an organization and donate a few hours every month.
- Are you good at writing? Do pro-bono social media work or write blog posts.
- Have talents with a camera? Offer to do photo shoots or videography for an upcoming fundraising campaign.
- Do you have closets of unneeded clothes? Find an organization who will take used clothing. BONUS: If you have business attire you want to give away, find a job resource center to help people who need interview clothing.
There are infinite amount of causes and organizations around the country and the world who need your help. If you’re concerned about their track record, Charity Navigator does a great job of rating organizations for you!
Here are some of the places I give my time and talents to- I hope you find some inspiration and join in the Giving Tuesday movement!
I’m a monthly donor for charity:water. I give $10 a month and am helping fund clean water projects around the world. They strive to be transparent and even give you GPS coordinates of wells you helped fund after they have been built. Donate
Girls on the Run
I was a coach for Girls on the Run for a few years in college and continued to help the Mid-Missouri chapter with marketing plans before I graduated. Their chapters around the country inspire girls to have confidence in themselves while cleverly integrating team building and running into the curriculum. Not to mention, it’s a total blast to be a part of. Donate
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals – Dance Marathon
My college campus had a Dance Marathon chapter that I got really involved in. MizzouThon showed me the impact a bunch of college kids could have on kids being treated at our children’s hospital. Kids deserve the right to be kids. Dance Marathons embodies this idea by making kids feel like superheroes and funding incredible programs at children’s hospitals around the country. Donate
I already featured GirlForward, but worth mentioning again in this list! They are one of the only (if not the only) organizations in the world who solely support adolescent girl refugees. Read my feature on them here. Donate
These are just a few – if you need help finding an organization to give to, check out Public Good. They are a website dedicated to matching you with organizations you care about!
