Soundbites: Bruce Springsteen

I love Bruce Springsteen. He is one of my all-time faves. I grew up listening to him because my dad is also a huge fan. My dad and I snagged tickets (aka I relentlessly checked Ticketmaster until we got tickets) and saw him this past weekend.

He played for 3 hours and 33 minutes. No opener. No break. He’s 66 years old and he’s still got it.

I’ve compiled my favorite Bruce songs in honor of The Boss. Of course, this is by no means a complete list of my faves, because it would be well over 13…

1. Dancing in the Dark

You can’t start a fire without a spark. ~ Don’t you just want to dance when you hear this song?

2. Two Hearts

Alone, buddy, there ain’t no piece of mind. ~ Recently discovered this song after watching the HBO Documentary: The Ties That Bind. I love it!

3. Death To My Hometown

Now get yourself a song to sing and sing it til you’re done. ~ I love the Irish folk music influence.

4. The Rising

Sky of memory, sky of shadow. A dream of life. ~ Written about 9/11, this entire album beautifully combines sorrow and hope.

5. I’m on Fire

Only you can cool my desire. ~ Mumford & Sons did a great cover of this Bruce classic.

6. The River

Is a dream a lie if it don’t come true, or is it something worse?  ~ A great example of Bruce’s masterful storytelling.

7. My City of Ruins

The church door’s thrown open, I can hear the organ’s song, but the congregation’s gone. ~ Another beautiful song about the despair and hope post-9/11. The last song on this playlist is Eddie Vedder’s acoustic take.

8. Born to Run

I want to know if love is wild, I want to know if love is real. ~ Would this be a true Bruce playlist without this song??

9. The Ties That Bind

You walk cool, but darlin’ can you walk the line?  ~ Another favorite from The River album.

10. American Land

Who will make his home in the American Land?  ~ The story of this song is the story of our country- a nation of immigrants who came here for a better life. And I LOVE the Irish influence.

11. Atlantic City

Everything dies baby that’s a fact, but maybe everything that dies someday comes back. ~ Off the lesser-known album, Nebraska, Atlantic City is one of my all-time favorites. I love when Bruce goes acoustic.

12. Devils & Dust

What if what you do to survive kills the things you love? Fear’s a powerful thing. ~ Again, love the acoustic Bruce songs.

13. The Promised Land

I ain’t a boy, no I’m a man, and I believe in a promised land. ~ I had to end the playlist on this one. I love the chorus!
